Arab League

“The League of Arab States (LAS) with its seat in Cairo, Egypt is an intergovernmental organization encompassing all Arab states in the Middle East and North Africa, established in Cairo on March 22, 1945, following the adoption of the Alexandria Protocol in 1944. Currently it gathers 22 Arab countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The Arab League’s mandate focuses on strengthening relations between its member states, coordination of their policies and co-operation between them while safeguarding the independence and sovereignty of each member. Over the years, the Arab League has created frameworks for pan-Arabic cooperation on political, security, economic and legal issues. As the only pan-Arab organisation, the EU’s cooperation with LAS provides a unique opportunity to develop closer relations between the Arab World and the European Union.”

Topic A: TOPIC: THE PRESS, JOURNALISM, & MEDIA COVERAGE

As conflicts in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region progress, the need for effective journalistic practices and regulations has been heightened. The expression and publication of knowledge is a human right, and the United Nations acknowledges the need for increased standards of protection and assistance for correspondents. Delegates must present and preserve their nation’s interests regarding policies for journalists and media regulation, while pursuing an overarching agreement that may come to serve MENA member states to address media coverage in the region. While the League of Arab States (LAS) has rearmed its commitment to the values and principles of the United Nations’ perspective on journalist safety, in practice, reporters and media institutions encounter threats and legislation that restrain information through censorship. Conicts in much of the area create dangerous conditions for journalists to eectively transmit knowledge, and statistically, the MENA region contains a majority of the most restrictive nations on press freedom.

Topic B: TOPIC: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABILITY

As many of the leading producers of fossil fuels are nations in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region, eorts in increasing sustainable energy use have been slow to rise. The United Nations envisions a future in which fossil fuel usage is decreased in order to protect a viable quality of life while maintaining economic development. Delegates will discuss the status of fossil fuel investment and usage in their nation’s, in the hopes of developing plans to eectively preserve energy availability and access. This topic will allow for the assessment of fossil fuel usage and distribution in the MENA region.
